Birthday Gift for Mom FINISHED

So I have been working on this project off and on for the past month.   Its a pattern my mom posted on facebook asking me to make.  I gave my standard answer for projects that are blanket sized -- buy the yarn and I will make it.

She bought the yarn (well 1/2 of it) and I got started.  Let me tell you first and formost, the finished item --looks great, the pattern... well that is using the term pattern VERY loosely leaves a lot to be 'free form'.  I dont know about you but if I am paying $6.50 for a pattern, it should be 1) Readable 2)Not contradict itself (point in case she has hand drawn charts showing one thing but the writen directions saying something else) 3)SHOULD NOT tell you to free form any part -- its a pattern --..... I am going to stop my rant here about this and get on with the post!

This photo was taken before I blocked the piece.  That is streached across my queen sized bed, just slightly hanging off the edges.  I realize that the space was not large enough to block the whole vest in one go so I broke it down and pinned out the center and steamed 1/3 of it at a time.

This is the tip of the edge and I think it took to the steaming well,  I was happy it did a nice point.  Since the yarn was acrylic I was not sure if the edge points would steam and stay pointy.

Here it is after I finished steaming and pulling out the pins.  Sorry for the blurry photos the camera on my phone did not want to focus on all the colors, hopefully I can get a good action shot of it on my mom at some point with a better camera.

So this pattern made me so frustrated, I am going to write my own 'boho style' circle vest.  At some point.

If you want the pattern you can find it here Bohemian Vest.  Be forewarned even though its just a load of treble crochets and chains, the writer over complicates things, leaves things out, contradicts her pattern/chart, and tells you to free form parts.

  1. I just helped her correct 22 out of the 45 rounds. She had asked me to test it for her and I said I would. I started my second one last night and really pushed in order to not keep her waiting for the corrections. I did up to round 28. I told her that she omitted the final chain 2 at the end of her repeat round. I suggested that she add it after the parentheses in that round. She said she would. Instead of adding the chain 2, she changed the pattern instruction to read that we are only to do one chain between the V-TRBL stitches instead of 2. I was fit to be tied! I had the choice to rip out 6 rounds because I had already done the chain 2 like she had said, or scrap it. I am going to scrap it and am not going to help her with the rest of the corrections. This pattern is beyond frustrating!

    1. Its sad that she isnt accepting help especially if she asked for it. Like you said it was almost 1/2 of the rows had something that need adjusting, even something as small as remembering to chain before joining rounds is important. I saw her post an updated version, but when I compared it to the older copy I have, I did not see any changes where I had found errors. She really should have had it tested before releasing it for sale because a pattern like this could make people never want to support designers by buying again.

I gave up on the pattern and just 'free formed' the finished item you see from photos of others finished pieces. Its almost as if you need a support group just to get through the pattern. I think if someone asked me to make an other, I will ask if they mind me making up my own pattern, I would literally write a new pattern that is inspired by the lacy v-stitch and spiral look before attempting this pattern as it is currently written.

    2. I am sorry for being so late in getting back to you. I have been dealing with other frustrations with her.
I just wrote a long post but it was too long for on here, so I will make this short. I just posted my latest vest that I made and I took her to task for quite a few things. If you have a moment, go and check it out. I think you will get the "rest of the story" from what I wrote.

  2. OH man, I just bought her pattern and enough yarn to do two of these. I did message her on Ravelry asking for the corrected copy. She asked for verification that I actually bought the pattern, which I gave her, but have not heard from her since. It's only been a couple days, and I am sure she is busy with life. but now I am freaking about having to attack this pattern. There does not seem to be a date on her pattern, so I can't tell if I have the updated version (which you say isn't updated at all) or the old one. I bought it Oct 29th, so I am hoping it is the updated version. But I agree. With so many people finding mistakes, I'd think she'd pull the pattern off craftsy, fix it, and put it back up. Either that or offer it free to 5 people, let them test it, and then update the pattern from there. Now I don't even want to start it. But I'm bummed, cuz there is really nothing else out quite like this one. Many are similar, like off of Garnstudio/Drops patterns, but they are smaller. Anyways, that's all... just rambling I guess. That, and I have 2 sets of yarn stashes that now have no purpose. (not that that is ever a problem, but, well, you know.

    1. She was openly hostile when I contacted her about fixes. Maybe she was having a bad day that day but I don't think she cares about helping much. I have looked over her 'updated' version and compared it to the copy I had before the update went out and they visually page by page they look exactly alike. So I am not sure what she really updated exactly it was not any of the sections that had issues.

    2. Lisa, here is the web site for the original pattern that Donna appears to have taken and modified so she could make a profit from it. I had looked at this pattern many times before I bought hers, and I always thought they looked the same. All Donna did was to add around 3 extra cluster rounds and she also changed some of the stitches and then called it her own. Here is the original pattern: https://mirincondecrochet.wordpress.com/2011/05/06/soberbio-chaleco-circular/

    3. Thank you! :) took me a while to get back to this page, as the notifications were going to my autotrash folder.

  3. P.S. is it at all possible for you to point out which areas are the "wonky" ones? That way I can relax during the correct ones, then not be surprised when the wonky parts come up. I can just take my time and think them through. Much appreciated.

  4. I just started this last night, got to round 18 and ripped it back to 12 because it was curling so badly. I'm not a tight crocheter and used the treble crochet suggested but still, no dice. If I had known that I was going to have to "freehand" things, I would have figured out a pattern for myself! The main issue I'm seeing so far is there are no increases in the rounds to make them lay flat. Freehand it is!

  6. I just paid for this "pattern" but now I am afraid to purchase the yarn to start it after reading the reviews. This is really a hot mess and I am so sorry for what everyone else has gone through. Since I've already paid for the pattern, would someone PLEASE send me the corrections or the word.doc that was mentioned? I can be reached at Veviticus@msn.com . I would love all of us to be able to crochet this pattern successfully and post pictures in spite of some one else's lack of respect and integrity for another's work. We can posts our pictures of our finished work and give credit to the original and rightful owner of the pattern.

    5. I have not actully gottn to it. Mostly because it will take about 2000 yards of yarn and at the moment I dont have that yardage to spare on a pattern writing/testing. I think if someone commissions me (have one who is thinking about it but would have to wait for tax return) I will get one out faster because I will have the $$ for the yarn.

I will defently add any pattern I write to my free/donation pages right away so always check there!

    6. can you send me the edits also? sheilabush123@gmail.com I purchased the pattern and had to wing it in some points. I am now on round 32. she says, end with a chain three, then on round 33 she says chain one, single in the same ch.1. Where does she want me to put the chain one? I looked at the pics and still do not get it. I was so sad last night after getting this far I could cry. I am not good at freeforming, that is why I paid 6.50 for a pattern. Ugh.

I feel your pain. Her pattern is the whole reason I wrote my BoHo Lily Spiral Vest. I might be harsh saying this, but I really dont think her 'pattern' should be up for sale as its not realy a complete pattern, you have to be an advanced crocheter and know how to adapte for all the misstakes in whats writen to fudge it.
