Inspired Granny Square scarf-Commmision

ANN ROWLEY
I was asked if I could make a scarf like this one worn by Ann Rowley.

Her scarf will be the inspiration for the one I am about to start.  I am excited about getting into it and start working it as its a beautiful scarf, so you can keep an eye out for updates on this post for my progress!

Today I am breaking into the yarn and re balling all of it.  I had hopes that I could just pull from the center but after trying 3 balls and having all 3 give yarn vomit, I will be exercising my ball winder alot today.

Updates

6-30
I have roughly 2/3 of the first block made, I need to make 2 more mediums and 2 more smalls to finish off this block.  Its hard not to over lap and have a ton of one color keep cropping up on me.  I was trying not to repeat color changes and I still did -.- so I will need to keep an eye on that.

7-2

I finished the first block last night.  Now its up to me to make 3 more with out any color repeats with the selection of colors I was sent.

Colors I am working with are- White, Black, Tan, Grey, Dark Blue, Light Blue, Pink, Red, Yellow, Brown, Orange, Green.

Its 14x14 inches, if blocked after washing it could be 16 inchs wide.  I will have to wait to hear from the person who asked me to make this to decide if they want to wash it as the mail system is a dirty place and I often encurage washing an item before useing it if its been mailed.  If they wash it it would 'reset' the fibers and any blocking I may have done will be undone so it may be better to let them wash and block.

Now to stop procrastinating and to start on the second block~~~

Technically I am joining as I work so its more like start adding on to this block, but it helps for me to break them up into sections when thinking about the over all pattern of this scarf.

7-7

After the holiday weekend here I have jumped back into the swing of this scarf.  I am finding it diffcult to make sure I am not doing sever color repeats with the 12 colors I was given, I have worked up a excel sheet to try and make sure I am keeping it balanced.

It was so overcast out today so the colors look more muted then they actually are.  I am finding I am more in love with some of the color combinations then others so I have to keep an  eye out so I don't keep clumping them together in squares. I caught myself  doing the same back to back color changes for a 4th time and had to frog a bit to fix it.  Its getting hard not to havve two joining rounds wind up with the same ending color but I think I am managing it, with the exception of kitty-corner touching squares.

7-9
Its almost as long as my bench now!

Its 42 inches long now, and I think I have worked out any color issues and repeats from happening.

I got a bit of sun in the photo.

Blocking will even out the edges, but that will have to wait, I badly want to edge this but I think it would take something away from it. Especially when it hits the edge of a same color join of one of the squares but it will be up to the recipient and if there is enough yarn left after I finish it.

I think I have enough to squeeze in 2 more blocks (1 big, 3 med, 4 small) which will leave it at 70 inches long (unblocked).

7-14

No photo update today as its stormy out.  I am nearly finished though, just 3 small blocks, 2 medium blocks and one large block left to do!!

7-15

Finally all finished!!

I will go over it with my darning needle one more time to make sure I got all the tails.  Then sweep it with the pet hair removal brush to try and catch any kitty fuz that may have been attracted to it because its yarn, and thats what yarn does.

After all of that I need to find the best way to ship it that wont cost an arm and a leg from the US to England.

More procrastination...?

I swear I am working on getting my patterns all typed up and bundled. While doing it, I had an idea.  What would an Octo look like if I made it with a African Flower motif to start.  This is the result, I know if I make a second I have to work on the flower part as it left gaps big enough for stuffing to seen which means it can be pulled/worked out.  I used the left over yarn from my purse and scraps from the pillow shame I made back in april.

I am currently working on a Mythic Amigurumi Booklet that will have the patterns I wrote for chibi dragons, cthulhu, abnormal unicorn, and a dragon egg pouch.

Birthday Gifrt from my Hubby finaly came in!

I finaly got my birthday gift from Wayne in, he gave me a gift card to Knit Picks and I bought some of the items that have been sitting in my 'wish list'.

I got their Turkish spindle, I am slightly disappointed by it, the whorl and bead are both solid wood but the spindle feels like some sort of compressed faux wood that reminds me of those cheap chopsticks.  It was probably done for the weight balancing I will just have to wait till I use it to see how it works, its heavier then the spindle I made out of chopsticks.
That is 100g Sapphire Heather Wool of the Andy's Roving under the spindle.  I cant wait to get my hands into it, but I want to work on my drafting some more so I dont ruin this beautifully soft wool.

As for this lot of yarn, from top left to bottom right:
Eggplant
Cobblestone Heather (also in the3rd row 3rd ball)
Celestial (also in the 3rd row 4th ball)
Grass
Solstice Heather
Lady Slipper
Cornflower
Asphalt Heather
Indigo Healther Tweed
Wellies Heather Tweed

I didnt realize that the two Tweeds where only 50g balls.  They are very small -.-  I had planned on making the Dirk the Dragon Pattern I also got for my birthday in the Indigo but I know there is not enough to even complete the body so I will have to come up with something else.   The other colors will be going into the other pattern I got for my birthday the African Flower Hippo, I plan on cobblestone being my joining round color, outside of that I am not sure which of these other colors I will use, or if I will pull from my stash and save these for something else.

BUT making things for myself will be put on a back burnner because the yarn for a commissioned mixed granny square scarf has come in and I should work on it first.

Its finaly finished!!

So here is the finished purse!

After taking all the photos I realized I probably should have picked a more colorful place to photograph it since my bench is a nice faded silver and the purse, strap and lining, is shades of silver, lavender, and grays.

I opted out of doing a crochet strap for this purse as they did to much stretching and I always wind up having to limit the weight I carry.  I hand stitched in  the lining and strap.

The purse was very simple to make, I used Red Heart 1 skein in Dove, and Red Heart Romantic Lace in Silver.  Its all worked in the round, with HDC's, and FPDC to add some texture to the top.

I have almost half the lace left, but only a small bit of the yarn so one of each is more then enough to finish a purse.  I staggered the lace rows after the 3rd round I only worked the lace ever other row.

Birthday Gift

Birthday Gift to myself.

I didnt finish the whole thing in time for my birthday.  I did complete the outer part it just needs a lining i choose the fabric on top to line it with, and it needs a better strap the one I made just keep rolling off my shoulder.

Its a lace purse in shades of lavander and grey, so no the picter isnt washed out those are the colors.

Last Dragon before Fear the Con

Last creation I worked on before the con.

This little guy is the dragon I worked up to help me fine tune my pattern, I have the base layout and photos now and just need to format it.

I have decided to go the booklet route, so it will bet a bit longer as I write up my other patterns and get them all formatted in a booklet together.

Newest Chibi Dragon to join the bunch...

Meet Kisses.  She is chocolate brown, and silver with light purple eyes.

The colors just made me think of Hershey's kisses so thats where she got her name.

I have decided to hold off on working on puting together a pattern till after the convention I am going to sell at so I have more time to work on things to sell.

This does not mean I wont start on it, but dont expect it soon.

Any suggestions for color combos anyone would like to see the pattern dragon worked up in?  Think of what will photograph well, so white and black are both out the window.  I was thinking of digging threw my stash to see what I have, I know I have left over colors from my rainbow granny that are more then enough to make a dragon, and many diffrent shades of those colors.
